Street Racket has officially arrived in South Africa! During our first few days we were able to join forces with two reknown organisations to bring healthy and social activities into townships. Street Racket inventor and co-founder Marcel Straub conducted workshops with 60 facilitators and sports coaches following the train-the-trainer philosophy to maximize the output. All these fantastic and dedicated experts will use the acquired knowledge about the many game forms within their programs and therefore with hundreds of people.
In addition to the coaches we were very happy to welcome members of two more big sports organisations in our introductionary courses. The International Tennis Federation ITF sent coaches from Tennis South Africa to join in and Grassroot Soccer (a football program linked to FIFA Football for Hope) sent some of their staff as well!
Thanks to donors from Switzerland the Street Racket team handed over a starter pack of equipment to both organisations.
Workshop at Johannesburg University with Egoli Squash (www.egolisquash.co.za):
Over 5000 kids have already participated in the program. It aims to engage kids from disadvantaged communities in an intensive and long term experience, incorporating squash, fitness, tutoring, community service and mentoring in order to change children’s lives for better.
Egoli squash is a registered Public Benefit outreach program of Central Gauteng Squash and uses the sport of squash to curb the vicious cycle of poverty and crime for disadvantaged youth aged 8-18 years from the communities of Alexandra, Soweto and the Inner-city. Sport is the platform used to address youth and issues affecting them, their communities as well as to revive the spirit of ubuntu among our youth, as they are the future of the country.
Workshop in the heart of Alxeandra Township with Afrika Tikkun (www.afrikatikkun.org):
Afrika Tikkun was founded in 1994 with the goal to make a difference in the South African economy by developing and uplifting young people living in underprivileged communities. We believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to be the best that they can be! Thus, we take a holistic approach to the development of young people from early childhood up until adulthood. Our focus is on nutrition, health, education, holistic personal development, skills development, and ultimately work placement.
